Pasadena, CA - On a powerful evening in Pasadena, Philly D, GLDNWST’s in-house recording engineer, and K-Wil attended the screening of PASADENA: Exploring Solutions to Reduce Gang Violence, an eye-opening documentary by Steve Sneed and his talented team. The film dives into the deeply rooted challenges of gang violence, offering a blueprint for community-driven solutions. Through compelling narratives and honest dialogue, it illustrates how understanding and collaboration can transform neighborhoods plagued by cycles of poverty and violence.
Philly D, who has deep ties to Pasadena and has worked closely with many of the city’s fledgling recording artists and entrepreneurs, described the film as a much-needed spotlight on the city’s history and potential for growth.
K-Wil shared his personal connection, reflecting, "Growing up, I attended K-12 schools in Arcadia, but my parents made sure I was exposed to different ways of life by keeping me connected to Pasadena through programs like the Pasadena Running Roses. Back in the late '80s and early '90s, Pasadena was a very different place. Violence was a constant concern, and tragedies like the Halloween murders in ‘93—where three teens lost their lives after being mistaken for gang members—left a lasting impact.
I’ve always had an affinity for Pasadena, and that connection influenced my decision to teach in the city from 2005 to 2011. I truly hope to see a day where people of color come together, build toward progress, and foster a stronger sense of community."
The film underscores the need for community togetherness, especially in neighborhoods of color grappling with systemic socioeconomic challenges. It paints a vivid picture of how education, outreach, and dialogue can mend fractures and foster understanding. The stories of those impacted and the solutions they propose aren’t just relevant to Pasadena but serve as a global call to action.
